Wait! Those don’t look like xylophones!

Yes, it's true.  I didn't get those xylophones built by today like I had hoped.  As I sweated it out yesterday deciphering the plans from makeamarimba.com, I could feel the day waning.  Today was Erica's birthday, and I could feel myself stressing about the age-old conflict: work vs. the family truth.  So, thankfully, the great Wendy Silverberg is once again saving the day.  She agreed to let me borrow a few xylophones for the workshops in Boston this week and next, and for the concert in Hyde Park this Saturday.  Thank you again, Wendy!

Xylophone Construction Journey

raw materials

My wife thinks I'm nuts. And she's right. But that has nothing to do with this week's project: building xylophones that can be played by students in next week's Chameleon Arts Ensemble's residency in Boston. Last year, my teaching mentor Wendy Silverberg lent me a whole set of xylos, but this year I've decided to make my own (so I can keep them and my kids can use 'em!!!) The web-site where I got the plans says that one can build them in an afternoon. Well that's good, because that's about all I have. More soon… very soon.

While helping a friend learn GarageBand, we got a belly laugh out of this.  When you create a new track, you are presented with the choice between a software instrument, a REAL instrument, and… electric guitar?  Insert electric guitar jokes here…
